Karr investigation reports released

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department has released detailed reports on its 2001 investigation of John Mark Karr, the one-time suspect in the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey.
Twenty-nine pages describing e-mail conversations between Karr and a confidential informant, family interviews and observations from detectives were made available Monday on the department Web site, www.sonomasheriff.org.
The release was in keeping with a promise by Sheriff Bill Cogbill to present the information when the case ended, Capt. Dave Edmonds said.
Many of the details were contained in court records unsealed when the case ended.
Prosecutors dropped misdemeanor child pornography charges against Karr on Oct. 5 for lack of evidence. In August, the former teacher had been arrested in connection with the 1996 slaying of JonBenet Ramsey. He was released after DNA testing.
The Sheriff's Department is continuing an internal investigation into the department's handling of the case. It is trying to determine how a computer hard drive seized from Karr that allegedly contained child sex pictures was lost.
That investigation is weeks from conclusion, Edmonds said.
