A 45-year-old Sebastopol pedestrian who was fatally struck Tuesday night on Highway 116 during a solo vehicle collision has been identified as Benjamin Thornton, the Sonoma County Coroner’s office confirmed Thursday morning.
CHP investigators found Thornton’s body Wednesday morning, about an hour after Petaluma motorist Georgia Argyle reported the collision west of Stony Point Road.
Thornton was dressed in black pants, a dark grey sweater and black shoes when Argyle, while driving her 1991 Toyota Corolla eastbound on Highway 116 at 10 p.m. Tuesday, hit him as he walked west in the eastbound lanes, CHP said. There is no shoulder along the road that would have enabled him to walk safely out of the path of traffic, according to CHP.
Argyle was estimated to be driving 45 mph to 55 mph in the 55-mph zone, CHP said. The driver and witnesses said that Argyle stopped immediately and began looking for a person she believed to have been a bicyclist, but could not see Thornton in the tall grass.
She has not been cited in the accident.
Witnesses are asked to call the CHP at 588-1400.
