Authorities are investigating the death of a 47-year-old Arkansas man found dead in the surf near Goat Rock on the Sonoma Coast early Wednesday.

The man was wearing street clothes and did not appear to have been the victim of a violent crime, said Jeremy Stinson, supervising ranger at Sonoma Coast State Beach.

Suicide "is one possibility that we're looking at," Stinson said.

The man's name was withheld pending notification of his family.

His body was discovered just after 8 a.m. in the surf off Blind Beach, just south of Goat Rock, by a visitor out for a morning walk, Stinson said.

His car was later found parked on Goat Rock Road, he said.

A state lifeguard dispatched to the scene pulled the man from the water onto the beach and determined that he could not be resuscitated, Stinson said.

There were no obvious signs of trauma, he said.

The Sonoma County Coroner's Office has taken over the investigation, Stinson said.
