A new land preservation group is working in partnership with state wildlife officials to improve a marsh near the farm lands that lie on the border of Sonoma and Napa counties.

The new Carneros Land Stewardship Foundation has chosen its first preservation project to be undertaken with the state Department of Fish and Game in the Napa-Sonoma Marshes Wildlife Area adjacent to San Pablo Bay.

The work there will improve habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, small mammals and other wildlife.

The nonprofit foundation plans to give financial aid to small-scale conservation projects in the Carneros region.

Emphasis will be given to projects that benefit the agricultural community. The foundation also will support research that could benefit the region's water resources through sustainable agricultural practices.

Funding is expected to come partly through two benefits, the March 29 Pinot Plus auction and the May 31 Carneros Heritage Fest.
