Fewer local job openings expected

Santa Rosa employers have lowered hiring expectations for spring, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.

In another indication of the sluggish economy, only 17 percent of local companies plan to expand payrolls between April and June. Another 13 percent plan cuts and 70 percent are maintaining current staffing.

Going into this year, 40 percent of local companies planned to hire workers in the first quarter, while 10 percent were reducing their payrolls.

Industries that are growing include transportation and utilities, and manufacturing. Wholesale and retail trade is one area where cuts are coming.

Nationwide, 26 percent of employers expect to increase workforces and 9 percent are reducing staffing, according to the survey by the Milwaukee-based staffing agency.
