SSU baseball team wins 17th in row

The Sonoma State baseball team, ranked fourth in the nation, extended its winning streak to 17 games with a doubleheader sweep of visiting San Francisco State on Friday.

The Seawolves won the opener 19-1 and took the nightcap 4-1 to improve to 23-1 and 12-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. San Francisco dropped to 4-20 and 1-13.

SSU had 27 hits in the opener, an attack led by catcher Konrad Thieme who went 4 for 6 with a double, two homers and eight RBIs. Dave Herman, Ian Bridges, Kyle Jones and Nick Nosti each had three hits for the Seawolves. Matt Means (5-0) struck out 12 and allowed one run in 8« innings.

In the second game, Tyrese McDaniel went 3 for 3 and Mark Pestorich went 2 for 3 to up his CCAA-leading average to .478. Kevin Asselin struck out eight and allowed one run in eight innings to improve to 4-0.

BASEBALL TOURNAMENTS

Three large-school high school baseball tournaments begin Monday -- Montgomery's Rabinovitz, Casa Grande's Adam Westcott Memorial and El Molino's West Sonoma County tournament.

The Rabinovitz is a two-day tournament with the championship game scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Doyle Park.

There will be four games Monday, each starting at 10 a.m.: Windsor at Montgomery, Cloverdale at Piner, Petaluma-College Park at Doyle Park and Analy at Santa Rosa.

The Westcott tournament begins Monday with Casa hosting Hogan at 10 a.m., Napa playing Cardinal Newman at 1 p.m. and Rancho Cotate playing Marin Catholic also at 1 p.m. The Westcott winds up Wednesday with a 2:30 p.m. title game.

El Molino opens its tournament with a 10:45 a.m. game against Lower Lake. Elsie Allen opens Monday with a 4:15 p.m. game against Fortuna. The title game is Thursday.

Small school tournaments include Rincon Valley Christian's starting Thursday at Doyle Park and featuring some of the top Class B schools.

Fort Bragg also hosts a tournament next weekend that includes St. Vincent and highly ranked Piedmont.
