Solar systems for SR schools

In its third try at going solar, the Santa Rosa School Board voted late Wednesday to install solar panels at four of its campuses.

By next school year, rooftop systems should be in place at Cook Middle School, and Montgomery, Elsie Allen and Maria Carrillo high schools.

The board had twice rejected solar proposals, in large part because earlier solar installers said rooftop mounts were impossible at many of the schools in the district. Plans for covered parking structures sparked opposition from many who thought they would mar the look of schools.

Representatives from MMA Renewable Ventures of San Francisco assured board members Wednesday that rooftop mounts are feasible.
