Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. Here is a list of weekend observances.
SANTA ROSA
Monday, 10 a.m.: 37th annual Avenue of the Flags. Marine Corps League honor guard, music by the Redwood Chordsmen, rifle salute. Speaker Col. L. “Pete” Peterka, ret. U.S. Army. “Remember Me” display to honor Wes Pennewell. American Legion Post 21, Marine Corps League Detachment 686, Vietnam Veterans of America.
“All-American Fare” hot dog sale and food drive to benefit Redwood Empire Food Bank. Santa Rosa Memorial Park, 1900 Franklin Ave. For information, call 542-1580.
Monday, 9 a.m.: Rural Cemetery observes “Decoration Day.” Beyond the New Horizons Band to lead sing-a-long of patriotic and vintage tunes. “President Lincoln” to commemorate the 145th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Pie and milk, rose cuttings, flags and books for sale. 1-3 p.m.
Cemetery open for vehicle access 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday and Monday, except during Monday’s program. Veterans’ graves will be decorated with flags. Franklin Avenue and Monroe Street. For information, call 573-0103.
ROHNERT PARK
Monday, 9:30 a.m.: “Avenue of Flags” ceremony sponsored by American Legion Post 338. Rohnert Park Community Band. Color Guard to lead a procession past 170 flags at 10 a.m. Speaker Stephen R. Donley, Rohnert Park City Manager. Community Center, 5401 Snyder Lane. For information, call 795-3963.
PETALUMA
Monday, 10 a.m.: Speeches, music and color guard. American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America, Merchant Marines, Boy and Girl Scouts, Salvation Army to provide coffee and donuts. Monday, 11 a.m.: Sonoma County Veterans Memorial Park. Veterans groups include American Legion Jack London Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ceremony includes flyover by vintage aircraft. Sunday, 6 p.m.: Traditional Watch Fire, with food and entertainment at the Veterans Home of Yountville.

ST. HELENA
June 3: Tour of the Grand Army of the Republic Plot, in which Union Civil War veterans were buried. Presentation by Dean Enderlin will include the history of the G.A.R. in St. Helena, as well as stories of some of the veterans buried there.
