Friday was opening night for the new film “Sex and the City,” based on the successful HBO series of 1998 to 2004. The movie, written and directed by Michael Patrick King, was greeted enthusiastically at the Rialto Lakeside theater in Santa Rosa following two open contests to see who could best match the looks – and personalities – of the show’s primary characters.
Theater manager Ky Boyd acted as emcee, and the three-person judging team of BOB-FM’s on-air personality Natalie, editor Gretchen Giles of the Bohemian, and Melissa Hatheway of the Rialto Cinemas made their selection of the best entries. The competition was fierce but friendly, and the vocally-charged, primarily female audience made its preferences well known during the judging.
There were costume contests for show’s five characters, including Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes, and of course Mr. Big, the eponymous love interest for Carrie Bradshaw over many seasons. The winners received small gifts from the New Line Cinema, and then had the pleasure of watching 2 hours and 22 minutes of their favorite characters on the big screen.
Winners of the costume dress-off included:7:00 pm show:
Carrie - Christina Palomo
Charlotte - Deirdre Quinn
Miranda - Kristina Keck
Samantha - Terry Ulincny
Mr. Big - Tyler Holmes
7:30 pm show:
Carrie - Liza Gershman
Charlotte - Leanne Wranger
Miranda - Gail Glashnow
Samantha - Stacy Cohen
Mr. Big: Russ Gartiner
Then the party moved to Starks’ Steakhouse in Railroad Square, where Kir Royale, White Russians, and Chocolatinis were on the drinks menu until the wee hours. No catfights were reported in the neighborhood.
Stay tuned for a photo gallery of the evening's events.
