Senior hockey is in full swing and full stride at the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, where 56 teams of players ages 40 to mid 80s are competing.

Snoopy’s Senior World Hockey Tournament, the annual competition started by the late Charles Schulz, the Peanuts cartoonist, runs through Sunday, with games starting at 6 a.m. and continuing until the last game at 10:30 or 11:30 p.m.

This year the team from the farthest away is one from Switzerland, the oldest player is in his 80s and there are two former NHL players, Terry Harper, who played for the Montreal Canadiens, and Red Berenson, who played for the Detroit Red Wings.

“It is not many sports that I would willing watch 70-year-olds play,” said Kevin McCool, general manager of the ice arena. “They come walking in slow, they walk out slow, but when they get on the ice, they are children again.”
