49ers notes: Rigorous camp wearing out receivers

SANTA CLARA — Receivers are getting more attention than ever this summer during 49ers training camp as offensive coordinator Mike Martz installs his passing attack.

The wideouts are doing a lot of running. And, perhaps as a result, the 49ers are having a difficult time keeping their receivers healthy.

“Yes, it’s a lot more running. If you look at the offense in the past, it’s definitely a lot more running,” receiver Arnaz Battle said. “For me, personally, I’m in shape. I’m not out there dying or under a lot of fatigue, but guys are nicked up.”

Battle has a left hamstring strain that is expected to keep him out of action in the 49ers’ exhibition game Saturday night against the Green Bay Packers. Bryant Johnson (hamstring) and Ashley Lelie (calf) sat out the exhibition opener and are not expected to be in uniform Saturday, either.

Second-year player Jason Hill (groin) returned to practice Wednesday after missing two days of work. Moreover, veteran Isaac Bruce has been taking it easy, as he practices just once a day. The 49ers have no more double-day practices scheduled for training camp.

Rookie and first-year receivers Josh Morgan, Dominique Zeigler, Robert Ortiz, Jerard Rabb and Cam Colvin have taken most of the practice snaps this week.

Lelie is a six-year veteran who was signed last year to give the 49ers a deep threat. However, he caught a career-low 10 passes. Lelie has seen action in only three practices this summer. But coach Mike Nolan said the 49ers would consider keeping Lelie on the 53-man roster, even if he is unable to play during the exhibition season.

“He has enough (NFL experience) that we would consider it if he doesn’t play at all,” Nolan said. “But if he gets back out here, say next week, then he’s got a couple weeks to do something.”

QB UPDATE

J.T. O’Sullivan again worked with the 49ers’ first team offense. O’Sullivan has worked with the first team exclusively since the Aug. 4 practice against the Raiders when each of the three quarterbacks shared the practice time.

Alex Smith and Shaun Hill shared the practice time with the second string. Smith is expected to miss practice Friday to attend a funeral for his best friend, David Edwards, in the San Diego area. Smith is expected to return in time for Saturday’s game.

Nolan was scheduled to sit down with his coaches to map out the rotation and playing time for Saturday’s game against the Packers.

EXTRA POINTS

The 49ers have signed guard Tony Wragge to a one-year contract extension. Wragge is now signed through the 2009 season. He received a $175,000 signing bonus. Wragge is starting at right guard with David Baas expected to miss all of training camp with a torn pectoral tendon.

LB Brandon Moore, whom the 49ers released this week, signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals, remaining in the NFC West.

“You’d always like for him to go to another team, but that’s OK,” Nolan said. “I want Brandon to do well. He’s a good guy, a good person. He deserves good things, and that’s probably a good situation for him.”

LB Takeo Spikes is scheduled to make less money than the man he is expected to replace in the 49ers’ starting lineup. Spikes signed a one-year, $1.68 million contract. Jeff Ulbrich is scheduled to earn $1.875 million this season.
