About the race: The race pits Supervisor Valerie Brown, who has held the Sonoma Valley seat for six years, against a political newcomer, ecologist Will Pier. Brown, who has a long history in elected office, also has been a state assemblywoman and Sonoma city councilwoman. Pier, a teacher with the Sonoma Ecology Center who is running a lightly funded campaign, says she has lost touch with the district.
