SAN FRANCISCO — Something had to end. The Pirates hadn’t lost in their previous six games at AT&T Park, but Pittsburgh starter Zach Duke hadn’t won a game in his previous 12 starts.
Unfortunately for the Giants, the wrong streak ended.
Duke pitched the second shutout of his career, beating the Giants, 7-0, on Friday night.
“We didn’t do anything tonight,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “The pitching was off and offensively we got shut down completely.”
Duke had been 0-9 with a 6.82 ERA since June 9, but the Giants could not do much with him.
Their best chance was in the third, when they loaded the bases with no outs. Bengie Molina grounded into a home-to-first double play, and then Pablo Sandoval grounded out.
“Besides that, we didn’t threaten a lot,” Bochy said. “We didn’t have a lot of quality at-bats.”
Giants starter Kevin Correia gave up three runs on seven hits in 4« innings to take the loss. The Giants are 5-15 in his 20 starts this year.
UNVEILING TIME
Orlando Cepeda today will become the fourth player to be honored with a statue around AT&T Park, when his likeness will be unveiled at the corner of 2nd and King streets.
The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. and will be open to the public. King Street will be closed between 2nd and 3rd streets starting at noon.
“It’s a great honor,” Cepeda said. “It never came to my mind that a statue would be unveiled of me at any ballpark, especially in San Francisco, a city I love so much and a beautiful ballpark. Also to join Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal is a great honor.”
BRIEFLY
The Giants’ Class-A Augusta team won its South Atlantic League best-of-three playoff series with a victory over Asheville on Friday night. The Green Jackets will next play West Virginia or Lake County (Ohio) in a best-of-five series.
Fred Lewis got the night off. Lewis was in a 2-for-25 slump, and the bunion on his foot had been bothering him.
