A 32-year-old Santa Rosa woman was stabbed in the stomach near the old train depot in Railroad Square during a dispute Sunday evening.

Santa Rosa police arrested a 29-year-old transient man shortly after the attack. The names of the suspect and the victim were not available late Sunday.

Bystanders sitting in front of Flying Goat Coffee at 6:30 p.m. described a loud argument that escalated into violence when a man lunged forward and stabbed the woman.

“He kept yelling, ‘Touch me again. Touch me again,’” said eyewitness Amy Rohn of Santa Rosa. “Then he stabbed her.”

The woman staggered across the parking lot from the visitor’s center to the area in front of Flying Goat, where she sat down.

“She came over and just said ‘help me,’” Rohn said.

Blood was visibly collecting on the front of her shirt, and several people sprang forward to help her, according to witnesses. Another man ran after the suspect, and helped police identify him, according to Rohn.

Paramedics rushed the 32-year-old woman, who apparently knows the homeless man, to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. The wounds were not life-threatening, police said.

The suspect was arrested near the Redwood Gospel Mission Homeless Shelter on Sixth Street, said Sgt. Ron Nelson, of the Santa Rosa Police Department.

“He is in custody and the weapon was recovered,” Nelson said.

Charges had not been filed as of late Sunday night.
