A Santa Rosa man in jail Monday, suspected of the stabbing of a woman during a fight, was already wanted by police when he was arrested Sunday evening.
Taurin “Ogre” Charles Duane Cochran, 29, is suspected of the knife attack on Melissa Verrill, 32, of Santa Rosa, Sgt. Lisa Banayat said Monday. The two were in an argument in Railroad Square at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Witnesses told police they heard a loud argument before seeing a man lunge forward and stab the woman in the stomach.
While bleeding from the wound, the woman staggered across the parking lot.
Several people tried to help her and one man ran after the suspect. The man was arrested a few blocks away and officers found a knife.
Verrill was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Information about her condition wasn’t available Monday.
The combatting pair apparently knew other, Banayat said. A motive for the attack wasn’t known.
Cochran, known to police as a transient in Santa Rosa, also goes by the nickname “Ogre,” according to police records.
He is being held in lieu of $27,000, suspected of assault with a deadly weapon. But Cochran also was wanted by Santa Rosa police for two misdemeanor cases, failing to appear in court on a charge of possessing marijuana and trespassing at a business.
