Wal-Mart plans remain up in air

It's been four years since Wal-Mart announced plans to build in Santa Rosa, two years since it won approval to do so and two weeks since a judge put those plans on hold.
Today, the status of the corporate giant's 106,000-square-foot store planned for the Stony Point Shopping Center remains in limbo as Wal-Mart officials decide what their next step will be.
The project's future was put in question when Sonoma County Superior Court Judge Robert Boyd issued a final ruling that said the $169,000 environmental impact study done on the project, and on which city officials partly based their approval, did not sufficiently address several key issues, including noise and parking requirements.
Several attempts to contact Wal-Mart officials have been unsuccessful.
Chuck Regalia, Santa Rosa's community development director, said it's Wal-Mart's call on how to proceed. "It's their issue. It's up to them to decide if they want to appeal," he said.
Wal-Mart has 60 days from the final ruling to make that decision.
City Attorney Caroline Fowler said her office is attempting to set up a meeting with Wal-Mart representatives "to see what they want to do."
"They basically have three options. They can appeal the decision, redo the environmental impact report or take their project somewhere else," she said.
