Nearly 10,000 people showed up for a Kaiser Permanente flu clinic on Saturday, causing a traffic gridlock for Santa Rosa drivers.

The clinic, located at the Stein Medical Office Building off Old Redwood Highway, became the most-attended flu event that the health provider has hosted in Santa Rosa, surpassing last year’s record of 6,000.

Scores of vehicles lined Mendocino Avenue reaching as far as Bicentennial Way as Kaiser members arrived for the free flu shots, provided from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“I know it was challenging for people on the road,” said Guy Chicoine, a medical group administrator for Kaiser Permanente. “But considering we were able to to inoculate 10,000 people, it means we are saving lives in our community.”

Chicoine said the next flu shot clinic will be on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and he promised the help of the Santa Rosa Police Department to help funnel traffic. That clinic will also offer a drive through option for adults, so drivers don’t have to leave their car to get a flu shot.

Before flu season starts in January, members of Kaiser Permanente are encouraged to attend the daily clinics offered Monday through Friday to avoid long waits, Chicoine said.

A staff of 75 volunteer nurses and medical directors handled Saturday’s crowd.
