UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
What: A federally funded program that provides a meager cash supplement for people recently laid off.
How: Weekly payments range from $40 to $450, depending on a person's income before they were laid off. The benefits generally last 6 months.
Eligibility: Basically, a person needs to have worked at a job for at least six months or longer to receive full benefits.
Signing up: The easiest way to file for unemployment is online at https://eapply4ui.edd.ca.gov (note the 's' in 'https:'. It is required to connect to the page).
Information: Contact the state's Employment Development Department at (800) 300-5616 or www.edd.ca.gov.
What: The county's premier service for helping the recently unemployed find a new job, update a resume, get information about unemployment benefits, and generally deal with the transition back to employment.
Hours and orientation:
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; Job Link offers daily orientations to its services at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

What: Santa Rosa Junior College has a bunch of inexpensive -- from $2 to $20 -- career and personality assessment tests. The most expensive, and perhaps most well known, is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
