A Laytonville man injured his hand late Monday night with an illegal firework, Mendocino County sheriff's officials said Tuesday.

Emergency crews were called at about midnight Monday to a Laytonville address and found the injured man.

"He blew up his hand with some type of firework mortar," sheriff's Lt. Rusty Noe said. The man was reportedly treated for the injury and released.

Fire officials are investigating what happened. Deputies will cite the man on suspicion of possessing an explosive device, Noe said.

The man's name wasn't available Tuesday.
