The California Highway Patrol reported 33 fatal crashes in California over the long Thanksgiving weekend.
That’s the fourth year the numbers have dropped from 2005 when 60 people statewide died in CHP jurisdictions over the holiday time, officials said.
In 2007, 41 people died and in 2006, 46 people died over the Thanksgiving holiday.
“It keeps going down every year,” said CHP Officer Hugo Mendoza.
In Sonoma County, there was one fatality. A Forestville woman was hit Saturday night by two cars after she exited her own car following a crash on Highway 101 in Santa Rosa.
The woman was trying to walk across the highway, near Todd Road, when she was struck.
This year the CHP arrested 1,539 suspected drunken drivers statewide, down from 1,626 people arrested last year.
In Sonoma County, CHP officers arrested 24 suspected drunken drivers.
The CHP handles crashes and road issues on state highways, freeways and roads outside of city limits.
