After every 49ers game this season, Press Democrat staff writer Matt Maiocco grades the team’s performance.
Following are his grades for Sunday’s season-finale win over the Washington Redskins.
QUARTERBACK
B plus
It wasn’t always pretty, but Shaun Hill just continues to win. He threw for 245 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also engineered a 51-yard dive in the final minute that resulted in the winning points.
RUNNING BACKS
A minus
Frank Gore rushed for 58 yards on a sore ankle, and DeShaun Foster picked up 44 yards on nine carries. Michael Robinson had a strong game, including a 19-yard reception to help set up the winning field goal.
WIDE RECEIVER
B plus
Josh Morgan caught three passes for 50 yards. Bryant Johnson had two receptions, but one of them was a 24-yard pass that put the 49ers in position for the winning points. Jason Hill had four receptions, including a 9-yard scoring play.
OFFENSIVE LINE
A
The line did a good job of protecting Shaun Hill against the Redskins’ pressure. They also opened some good holes in the run game, as the 49ers averaged 4.9 yards a carry on 26 rushing attempts.
DEFENSIVE LINE
B plus
There was one point in the second quarter when the defensive line was being blown off the ball. But the line regrouped and played very well in the second half. Justin Smith had a strong game with six tackles, a sack, two tackles of losses and one pass defensed.
LINEBACKER
B
This unit did a good job throughout the game. Parys Haralson and Patrick Willis each had one tackle for a loss. Willis and Spikes recorded seven tackles apiece.
DEFENSIVE BACK
A minus
Nate Clements had a monster game with seven tackles. He was strong in run support. Walt Harris also played a physical game, as he broke up three passes to his side of the field.
SPECIAL TEAMS
A minus
Joe Nedney accounted for the winning points with his 39-yard field goal.
Nedney had an earlier miss after a bad snap by Brian Jennings threw off the timing of the kick. Return man Allen Rossum had a very good game, and Andy Lee averaged 49.7 yards (47.7 net) on three punts.
COACHING/OVERALL
A minus
The 49ers hit a lull in the second quarter, but they came back to pull out the 27-24 victory in the season finale. It was a fitting conclusion to Mike Singletary’s nine-game run as interim coach. He was awarded the full-time job in 2009 just moments after the game.
