Unconventional artists

Healdsburg's Hammerfriar Gallery celebrates its fourth anniversary with a reception combining performance and installation art from 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

The party will kick off two new exhibits showcasing work by unconventional Sonoma County artists: "String Puppets" by Gene McClelland and "Shaky Positions" by an installation artist who uses A&W Gerber as her professional name.

McClelland's puppets -- first spotted by gallery founder and owner Jill Plamann at last summer's Handcar Regatta celebration in Santa Rosa -- combine intricate design and almost surreal detail.

Gerber's installation is a political satire that combines words and pictures to create large banners. Visitors to the reception that would like to audition to pose for additional photographs, to be added to the installation during the course of the exhibit, should wear casual or work clothes. The installation will change as the Bush administration gives way to the incoming Obama administration.

The gallery is at 139 Healdsburg Ave. The shows run 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays, through Feb. 10. Information: 473-9600, hammerfriar.com.
