Scott Linehan is expected to make a decision by the end of the weekend whether to accept the 49ers’ offer to become offensive coordinator.

The 49ers offered Linehan the position of offensive coordinator Thursday night, sources told The Press Democrat.

Linehan, 45, wants to return to coaching after being fired as Rams head coach after four games last season. Linehan was a successful coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins before compiling an 11-25 record in two-plus seasons as Rams coach.

On Friday, Linehan returned to the St. Louis area, where he lives with his wife and their three boys. The 49ers have agreed to let Linehan take his time to make a decision, a source said.

Linehan met Thursday for the second time in a week with 49ers coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan at the team’s offices in Santa Clara.

The 49ers declined to comment.

Rick Dennison, one of the other candidates for the 49ers’ offensive coordinator job, accepted a job to remain with the Denver Broncos, the Rocky Mountain News reported. Dennison will be the Broncos’ offensive line coach on Josh McDaniels’ staff.

Also, the Broncos hired former 49ers offensive assistant Adam Gase as wide receivers coach, a source close to Gase said. The 49ers gave the Broncos permission this week to interview Gase for the position.
