A Santa Rosa man who fled a police officer after he was observed using a cell phone behind the wheel of his SUV smashed into a utility pole after a brief pursuit early Friday, then ran away before police subdued him with a Taser stun gun, authorities said.

Drew Gonzalves, 19, was ultimately arrested for suspicion of drunken driving, evading a peace officer, resisting arrest and violation of probation on a previous grand theft case, authorities said.

He was briefly treated for complaints of pain before he was taken to the Sonoma County Jail, where he was being held without bail on Friday, authorities said.

Santa Rosa Police said Gonsalves was eastbound on Highway 12 at Mission Boulevard at about 1:30 a.m. Friday when the officer who spotted him tried to pull him over.

Gonsalves then sped up to about 60 mph and continued east for a short distance before trying to turn onto northbound Cardinal Way, where he ran into a corner power pole, police said.

Jumping from his car, Gonsalves ran off on foot while the pursuing officer called for backup and gave chase.

Several officers eventually caught up with Gonsalves, who was tased once so police could handcuff him when he refused to comply with orders, police said.

The power pole was broken when Gonsalves struck it, and the 2002 Nissan Xterra he was driving also was badly damaged, police said.
