A sports utility vehicle clipped a parked car and careened into a house on the corner of Spencer Avenue and King Street in Santa Rosa Thursday night.
The driver, the vehicle’s one passenger and the home’s startled occupants all escaped injury from the 8:45 p.m. accident.
But the impact deployed the air bags. And the vehicle, either a Ford Explorer or Expedition, sustained significant damage, as did the back of the home from which the SUV still protruded at 10 p.m.
The driver, a woman about 30 years old, told officers that her foot slipped and hit the accelerator, said Police Sgt. Mike Clark. As a result, he said, “she lost control of the vehicle.”
Clark said the identity of the driver wasn’t immediately available.
A resident of the five-bedroom home, who asked not to be identified, said at first he thought he was experiencing an earthquake.
King Street neighbor Henry Ristad said he watched outside as the vehicle left its parking spot about four houses down from the damaged house. Suddenly the SUV lunged forward, he said, and then he heard “a big ol’ thud and crash.”
Santa Rosa firefighters detected a gas leak and shut off the home’s gas supply. Later a utility crew was on the scene to survey the damage to the home’s electrical supply.
