After a monthlong trial, jurors said Jose Mendez Gonzalez was responsible for the death of Pedro “Pepe” Gonzalez Ruiz, a Marce Becerra Academy student and clerk at the Molsberry Market in Larkspur.

Gonzalez was shot once in the chest and three times in the skull, according to autopsy results. His body was found in downed tree limbs over an embankment off Westside Road.

A semi-automatic handgun was found in the same area a few days after Gonzalez’ body was discovered.

Investigators said Mendez killed Gonzalez because the younger cousin had hit on his girlfriend.

Mendez was found guilty of one count each of first-degree murder and personal use of a firearm. Both charges carry 25-year-to-life sentences. Sentencing is scheduled April 8.
