The 49ers already have a two-person competition lined up at quarterback this offseason. Would they add a third to the mix?
That is a question the 49ers might be faced with April25 when the club goes on the clock with the No.10 overall pick.
USC quarterback Mark Sanchez, expected to be a high draft pick, arrived in the Bay Area Wednesday evening to meet with 49ers coaches and officials. Sanchez and Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford are expected to be the top two quarterbacks chosen in the NFL draft.
Shaun Hill and Alex Smith are competing for the 49ers starting job during the clubs offseason program. Veteran Damon Huard is currently the teams No.3 quarterback.
But the 49ers are spending plenty of time this week looking at quarterbacks, including Sanchez, who started just 16 games in his college career. He enters the NFL with the advantage of having played in USCs pro-style offense.
It works both ways, 49ers coach Mike Singletary said last month when asked about selecting a quarterback with little college experience.
No.1, youre happy that the kid hasnt taken a lot of hits. Hes fresh. But on the other hand, how many games do you need? If a kid has it, he has it. If he doesnt, he doesnt. He can play 10 years, if he doesnt have it, he doesnt have it.
The 49ers met Tuesday with Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman, who might be the only other quarterback with credentials to be selected in the first round. Also, the 49ers are scheduled to meet today with Ball State quarterback Nate Davis, a likely selection in the middle rounds.
The team is scheduled to visit with offensive linemen Andre Smith (Alabama) and Michael Oher (Mississippi) and outside linebacker Aaron Maybin (Penn State) all players mentioned as possibilities to be chosen at No.10.
The 49ers have already met with receiver Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech), defensive lineman B.J. Raji (Boston College), linebacker Rey Maualuga (USC), and running backs Arian Foster (Tennessee) and Kory Sheets (Purdue). Running back Mike Goodson (Texas A&M) is also scheduled to visit later in the week.
