A man who lost control of his car and crashed into a guardrail along Highway 101 near Cotati early Friday was arrested for suspected drunken driving and resisting arrest after authorities subdued him with a Taser stun gun, the CHP said.

The man, whose 12:50 a.m. crash was witnessed by at least one other motorist, had been southbound on 101 near Highway 116 when he was observed driving recklessly, CHP Sgt. Mack Lewis said.

He ultimately lost control of the car and hit the guardrail, Lewis said.

When officers called to the scene approached, “he was extremely intoxicated and combative toward law enforcement,” Lewis said.

One used a Taser stun gun to subdue him so officers could arrest him.

He is believed to have given authorities a false name, however, and his name was being withheld until it could be confirmed, Lewis said.

The incident was one of two alcohol-related crashes that occurred on Highway 101 in Sonoma County in the wee hours of Friday, rounding out a day made busy by collisions and crashes on rain-slicked roads, he said.

Around 2 a.m., a northbound driver lost control of his vehicle near Petaluma Boulevard North and Old Redwood Highway, and spun off the road and into a field, where he overturned, Lewis said.

“When it’s a wet roadway, you’ve got to reduce your speed,” he said. “If you don’t, this is what happens, especially if you mix alcohol.

“It’s not a good combination,” Lewis said.
