The 49ers made a significant move for the future of the organization Thursday, signing outside linebacker Parys Haralson to a four-year contract extension.

New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre is sacked by San Francisco 49ers linebacker Parys Haralson during the fourth quarter of a game in San Francisco on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008.
MARCIO JOSE SANCHEZ / Associated PressHaralson, who led the 49ers with eight sacks last season, is scheduled to receive $6.5 million guaranteed as part of a deal that could earn him $15 million over four seasons, a league source said. He is now signed through the 2013 season.
“It’s outstanding,” 49ers coach Mike Singletary said. “Parys is only going to get better. He is the ultimate blue-collar guy. He’ll give you all he has day in and day out. You give me 10 others just like Parys and we could win championships. I am very happy for him.”
The club also signed kicker Joe Nedney to a two-year extension through 2011. Both Haralson and Nedney had contracts that were set to expire at the end of the current season.
“It was a priority because (I’m) excited about the direction the team was going and I’m excited about the things coach (Mike) Singletary is doing with the team,” Haralson said. “It’s all about being somewhere you are comfortable. I like it out here, and I’m just excited to be here for an extended amount of time.”
The 49ers recorded just 30 sacks last season, so the club is expected to look for some help in the draft. Haralson is set at one of the pass-rush positions, but the 49ers have not gotten results from the other side.
It is questionable whether the 49ers would use the No.10 overall pick to select a player to rush the passer, but the club is expected to use at least one of their nine draft picks on outside linebacker.
“I’m excited about the guys we have now,” Haralson said. “Whatever happens in the draft, we’ll see where it goes. If they want to get us more help on the defensive side of the ball, we’d be excited about that. But I’m excited about what we have now.”
Haralson said he believes Manny Lawson will make his mark this season as a pass-rusher. Lawson sustained a knee injury in 2007 that cut his season short after two games. Last year, he played almost entirely on first downs and was generally not on the field in pass-rush situations.
