Sonoma County seniors to be honored for volunteerism, leadership

The 2009 Community Youth Service Awards will honor 10 Sonoma County high school students on May 5 for volunteer efforts and leadership in their communities.

The awards program, now in its 21st year, is sponsored by The Press Democrat.

Winners are chosen in each of 10 categories from 132 nominees from 20 area high schools. Winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship.

The categories are: agricultural/vocational, arts, athletics, community action, ecology, English/foreign language/education, health sciences, journalism/media, mathematics/technical or music.

Roberto Ramirez, a retired teacher, is the keynote speaker at the event to be held at 8 p.m. on May 5 at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa.
