A 20-year-old Santa Rosa resident was killed while crossing Santa Rosa Avenue -- at a marked crosswalk -- on Tuesday night, police said.

Edgar R. Perez Lopez, who just turned 20, was on the east side of Santa Rosa Avenue at Court Street at about 8:35 p.m., said traffic Sgt. Doug Schlief of the Santa Rosa Police Department.

"He got across the two north-bound lanes and he was about halfway through the first south-bound lane; a southbound pickup truck struck him in the crosswalk," Schlief said.

Lopez was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Schlief said.

Schlief said it did not appear that alcohol or speed was a factor. "There were no skid marks and no evidence of any abrupt braking," he said.

Schlief said the crosswalk, south of Yolanda Avenue, is clearly marked, but there is no traffic light for pedestrians. The identity of the driver was not released. No one was cited in the incident, but the case remained under investigation.
