If you haven’t focused on the May 19 special election, you’re not alone.

In a Field Poll released last week, nearly one in three voters knew nothing about Propositions 1A-1F, the six measures on the ballot. And it seems likely that Election Day turnout will be even smaller than the dismal 28 percent recorded in the June primary last year.

But the stakes are too high to sit it out.

California teetered on insolvency earlier this year, and the budget crisis isn’t over. Depending on the outcome May 19, things could be a little better — or a lot worse.

The issues are complicated, even confusing, but we’re trying to clarify them in news articles and editorials. In addition to our recommendations on this page, you can find full editorials on each ballot measure at pressdemocrat.com/opinion.

If you aren’t registered to vote and want to cast a ballot in this election, today is the deadline. You can obtain registration forms at the county election office in Santa Rosa and many public agencies, including libraries and the Department of Motor Vehicles.
