For some, the Human Race is a pavement-pounding competition of the fittest. For others, it’s Halloween in May. In 2008, a woman dressed up like the Olympic torch. Elvis and Priscilla joined in and the gang from The Living Room of Sonoma County carried a couch for miles. A people-watcher’s paradise, it all goes down at

CELEBRATION: Healdsburg throws a party
Say hooray for the town founded by Harmon Heald and others back in the mid-1800s, when the burg salutes itself in its iconic Plaza at “Celebrate Healdsburg 2009,” noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.
On tap: food from local restaurants and service club booths, grilled goodies after the barbecue contest, chef demonstrations, wines and ciders. See arts and crafts, or win some in a raffle.

MOTHER’S DAY: Brunch for mom by Ferrer
Cooking for mother can be a bit like singing for Aretha Franklin. Spare yourself the challenge of out-cooking the master by letting Gloria Ferrer do the work.
The winery, a little bit of Catalonia at the southern end of Sonoma Valley, is preparing a multi-course brunch for El Dia de La Madre, Mother’s Day, complete with tapas and paired with appropriate wines. MORE MOM: Honor your mother with Kundes’ help
Kunde Family Estate in Kenwood opens its vineyard terrace for a decadent, Wine Country Brunch at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in honor of Mother’s Day. The Brunch will be followed by a tour through the caves of the winery and a tasting of wine right out of the barrel. Other surprises include an array of raffle prizes, ranging from a full vineyard tour with lunch to wine signed by the Kunde family. Space is limited. $60 per person. 282-1534.
