Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week’s picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):

Handley, 2007 Anderson Valley Pinot Gris, $18. A refreshing pinot gris with great minerality. Tropical aromas and flavors of pineapple and citrus. Smooth texture.

Summers La Nude, 2008 Monterey County Chardonnay, $20. A tropical chardonnay with complex flavors of apple, pineapple and pear. Intense flavors, yet balanced.

Dutcher Crossing, 2007 Bernier-Sibary Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, $39. A zin-based blend with some petite sirah, mourvedre and carignane in the mix. Great structure, lush berry flavors and plenty of spice. Soft, lingering finish.

Small Vines, 2006 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, $50. A complex pinot with good acidity. Great black and red fruit and just the right dose of spice. Elegant.

Luna, 2006 Reserve Napa Valley Sangiovese, $50. A sangiovese with firm tannins. Aromas of lavender and raspberries. Notes of cherry, pomegranate and dark chocolate. Good length.
