A Redding man charged with orchestrating a $200 million Ponzi scheme convinced a judge Tuesday he could not afford his own attorney and was appointed a public defender.

James Koenig, 57, also gave up his right to a preliminary hearing within 10 days of his arrest during Tuesday's hearing in Shasta County Superior Court, the Redding Record Searchlight reported. He has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of securities fraud and burglary.

Two co-defendants from Sonoma County, Gary Armitage and Jeff Guidi, were not present for Tuesday’s hearing. They are scheduled to be transported from the Sonoma County Jail this week and appear in Shasta County Superior Court on Friday, the Record Searchlight reported.

Armitage, 59, and Guidi, 54, were arrested Thursday at their homes in Sonoma County on charges of securities fraud and burglary. The two men were partners in AGA Financial, a now-defunct Santa Rosa investment firm. Each was being held Tuesday on $5 million bail.
