Orchard Supply Hardware is hiring 70 to 80 workers for its new store in Santa Rosa.

The home improvement retailer will hold a job fair next Tuesday at Sonoma County Job Link in Santa Rosa. Hundreds are expected to attend the all-day event, said Job Link manager Kathy Young.

“There’s a lot of competition for jobs like this,” she said. “They have a wide range of openings — it’s not just for sales clerks.”

Job seekers will get to meet Orchard Supply managers and learn about the company, said OSH spokesman Sunny Chhabra.

“Everybody who submits a resume will be interviewed,” he said.

Hiring will be done at a later round of interviews at the new store, Chhabra said. Positions include cashier, sales associate, department lead, receiving associate, pick-up associate, price change clerk/auditor and security cashier. Hourly pay ranges from $8 to $16.80.

Retail employment in Sonoma County took a hit earlier this year with the closures of Mervyn’s, Circuit City, Home Depot/Yardbird’s, Shoe Pavilion and other stores. Gottschalk’s department store in Coddingtown will close later this month.

“There are a lot of people out there with retail experience, plus a lot of managers and supervisors,” said Young. Job seekers with construction backgrounds may also want to apply with OSH, since it carries a large selection of building supplies, she said.

Job seekers should complete an application at OSH’s Web site before attending Tuesday’s fair, Young said. The Job Link center is at 2245 Challenger Way. The fair is from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Job Link will hold a free workshop on “How to Shine at a Job Fair” Thursday at 1 p.m. at the center.

OSH is building its new store at 2230 Cleveland Ave., just north of Coddingtown. The location was formerly occupied by a Circuit City store.

OSH’s 35,000-square-foot Santa Rosa store will open in mid-October, Chhabra said. The company will open another new store in Fairfield at the same time.

“OSH sees these areas as growing markets that will respond to its extraordinary customer service and value,” the company said Wednesday.

The do-it-yourself retailer has 86 stores in California, including one in Petaluma, with annual sales of nearly $1 billion. The retailer’s core product categories include tools, hardware, paint, electrical, garden, industrial and nursery.

OSH, which began as a farmers’ cooperative in San Jose in 1931, is part of Sears Holdings, the third-largest U.S. retailer.
