Services are today in Austin, Texas, for Kyle Daniel Peters, a 21-year-old Santa Rosa Junior College student who died in a plane crash in Arizona on June 24.
Peters had hitched a ride with a pilot passing through the airport in Sonoma County and was on his way to spend the summer with his parents in Cedar Park, Texas. The plane went down during take-off after a refueling stop at the Holbrook, Ariz., airport, killing Peters, the pilot and two friends of the Peters family.
He was a student at the junior college for the last year and half, taking course work in business finance, according to his family, all of whom live in Texas. He came to the SRJC because a friend was attending classes here, his family said.
He was born in Bay City, Texas, and grew up in Cedar Park, Texas. He graduated from Cedar Park High School in 2006.
His family said he was extremely devoted to his pets and his beloved German Shepherd, Sensi, is remaining with his family in Cedar Park. He spent his free time riding in BMX and Motocross events and he had taken up snow boarding while living in Northern California.
He is survived by his parents, Dan and Susan Peters of Cedar Park, grandmother Fern Ovenden of Austin, grandparents Daniel and Alice Peters of Harlingen, Texas.
His family is holding a memorial service today at River Bend Church in Austin with burial at nearby Remembrance Gardens.
The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions in his name to Food for the Hungry, Donor Services, 1224 E. Washington St., Phoenix, Ariz., 85034-1102.
