An Oregon girl and a Willits man were killed when their Dodge pickup crashed through a guard rail and tumbled 100 feet down a cliff on Highway 101 north of Leggett on Thursday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The names of the victims, ages 17 and 25, were not released, pending notification of family.

A preliminary investigation indicated the pickup, driven by the Willits man, was heading southbound on Highway 101 two miles south of Confusion Hill just before noon when it crossed the double yellow lines to pass a slower-moving tractor trailer.

The pickup sideswiped an oncoming, northbound pickup, then careened into the front corner of the tractor trailer before crashing through a guardrail and over the cliff, the CHP said.

Both victims were ejected. The girl, pinned under the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was flown to Ukiah Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The drivers of the tractor trailer and truck were not injured, the CHP said.
