Sonoma State University President Ruben Armiñana has lost a dramatic amount of weight over the past year after undergoing gastric bypass surgery.

“I have lost 100 pounds,” he said.

Armiñana, 62, was hospitalized earlier this month after a bleeding ulcer was discovered. The ulcer was a complication from his June 2008 surgery, he said.

The hospitalization forced Armiñana to miss one of three budget meetings held at California State University headquarters in Long Beach.

Despite the scare in which he lost half of his blood supply in one day, his health is good, he said this week.

“I hope so,” he said.

Armiñana has been at the helm of the campus in Rohnert Park since 1992.
