Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week’s picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):
Starborough, 2008 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, $15. A lively sauvignon blanc. Aromas and flavors of melon and peach. Citrusy finish.
Whitehaven, 2008 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, $23. Crisp and clean with notes of peach, gooseberry and lemon. Great acid. Lingering finish.
Alban, 2007 Central Coast Viognier, $24.
Rocca, 2006 Yountville, Napa Valley Syrah, $45. Complex, with earthy notes. Aromas and flavors of cherry, plum and black pepper. Ripe and layered.
Patz & Hall, 2007 Hudson Vineyard, Carneros Chardonnay, $55. Complex with great minerality. Aromas and flavors of pear, peach and grapefruit. Lush, yet crisp and vibrant.
