Santa Rosa Police say there were two male victims in the initial assault at the Sonoma County Fair that preceded what investigators believe was a gang-related stabbing Thursday night.
The victims — relatives — left the fair after the initial confrontation near the carnival area, then became separated before one of them was attacked again by an undetermined number of people, police said.
Police were alerted when a civilian observed a man staggering near the intersection of Brookwood Avenue and Lee Street, directly north of the fairgrounds, shortly after 7:30 p.m.
An officer got to his side within seconds, police said, finding him near Lee Street and Ashbury Avenue, bleeding from the neck.
Police said it did not appear his injuries were life threatening. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
Police have not released his or his relatives’ names because of fear for their safety.
The 27-year-old man, said to be a caregiver at a facility for the elderly, apparently got in touch with his wife between the attacks, and she walked to the scene as police were aiding her husband.
She told a reporter there were something like 10 assailants who attacked him, and said her husband had tried to fight them off.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact gang crimes investigators at (707) 543-3670.
