In what CHP officials are calling an unusually high arrest weekend, officers in Sonoma County arrested 36 people, mostly for suspected drunken driving including one man who had his toddler nephew in the car, the CHP reported.

From 5 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Monday, local CHP officers took 36 people into custody. Of those, 29 were suspected of driving drunk, said Officer Jon Sloat, CHP spokesman.

The average number of arrests for CHP on a weekend in Sonoma County is about half of this weekend’s numbers. Last year on this weekend officers arrested 18 people, Sloat said.

Reasons for the high numbers, he said, could include the hot weather, the last day of the Sonoma County Fair and the impending start of school.

The weekend’s arrests included eight teens suspected of drinking.

At 12:30 a.m. Sunday, an officer stopped Santa Rosan Eugenio Sanchez, 29, after seeing him weaving and driving 20 mph on Santa Rosa Avenue, Sloat reported.

Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and child endangerment.

The two-year-old boy was sitting in a child safety seat but wasn’t buckled, Sloat said.
