NAPA The 49ers and Raiders practiced twice Tuesday, with two more practices slated for today. On Saturday, the clubs will meet at Candlestick Park in an exhibition game.
Anticipating the obvious, 49ers coach Mike Singletary issued an edict to his team before taking the practice field Tuesday. Yes, he addressed the subject of potential fisticuffs on the practice.
And what was his message about fighting?
Dont, Singletary said.
He added, We didnt come here to fight, Singletary said. We didnt come here for all the other things. Weve got too much work to do. Were not good enough for that.
But Singletary also offered some guidelines in which brawling might be allowed.
At the same time our guys will take care of themselves and they will respond, he said. I did give them permission to make sure they take care of themselves and each other.
And it might come to that, said 49ers linebacker Takeo Spikes said.
I expect it to get heated, he said.
Singletary said he is trying to watch as much as he can on the practice fields before sitting down to watch the film cutups after practice.
I just try to stay focused on all the things that I can, he said. There are certain things that are more important to me than others, and I have to look at the other things. My eyes are everywhere.
Singletary said the play on both sides of the line, as well as the quarterbacks, are the spots at which he is focusing.
Shaun Hill completed a higher percentage of passes than Alex Smith on Tuesday, but neither had much success getting the ball down the field. Singletary said he has yet to determine which quarterback will start Saturdays game against the Raiders.
Linebacker Patrick Willis and cornerback Tarell Brown suited up but participated only in individual work. Running back Michael Robinson returned to full practice.
Singletary made the 2.1-mile trip on foot from the practice fields back to the team hotel following the morning workout.
