Coach Mike Singletary said Sunday he is not ready to name a 49ers starting quarterback for the regular season, as he continues to mull over the decision with his staff.

Quarterback Alex Smith sustained a right thumb sprain while making a tackle after an interception in the 49ers’ 21-20 victory over the Raiders on Saturday. He’s listed as day-to-day, Singletary said, adding the injury will have no impact on his decision.

Shaun Hill is believed to have a sizable lead in the quarterback competition over Smith, who has not started a game since November 2007 because of shoulder injuries.

“I have to look at some more film,” Singletary said. “It takes me a little longer than some other people. I think attention to detail is key.”

The starters are scheduled to see their longest playing time in the upcoming game against the Dallas Cowboys, Singletary said. A decision at quarterback could be made at some point this week, though Singletary has not announced a timetable.

After watching the film of the 49ers’ exhibition game, Singletary’s view of the team’s quarterback play was unchanged.

“It was nothing great,” he said. “I just feel it’s one of those things, you have to look at the mechanics and some of the small things, and other ways they got better.”

EXTRA POINTS

* There is no diagnosis for right tackle Adam Snyder, who left the game just prior to halftime with sprains to his ankle and knee. Snyder did not appear to be favoring his leg as he left the locker room Saturday night. The club has yet to receive the results of the MRI examination.

* Singletary said the physicality of the offensive line jumped out at him after watching the film. The 49ers rushed for 275 yards.

* Was it Glen Coffee or the offensive line? Singletary said the two went hand-in-hand. Coffee rushed for 129 yards on 16 carries.

* Singletary said he plans to play his starters more against the Cowboys in the third exhibition game than in the other games. “Our starters will probably play a little bit longer, but we’ll still be careful in terms of how much we expose some of our guys that we know a lot about,” he said.

* The 49ers had a mixup in the secondary on the 24-yard JaMarcus Russell scoring pass to Louis Murphy, which came on a third-and-21 play. “It was a misread; it was as simple as that,” Singletary said. “The cornerback (Nate Clements) has to do a better job of getting back.”

* Isaac Sopoaga was the last starter to come out of the game. He starts at left defensive end, but he was playing nose tackle well into the fourth quarter.

“It was just a decision made as a staff going into the game,” Singletary said. “We wanted to play him a little more at nose, because he’s more familiar with it, rather than put any of our other guys at nose for an extended amount of time.”

* When asked which young players stood out to him, Singletary said there were a number of them: Reggie Smith, Scott McKillop, Carlos Thomas, Glen Coffee, Kory Sheets, Nate Davis and Chilo Rachal. “I feel very good about our young guys,” he said.
