Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):
Martin Codax, 2008 Albarino Rias Baixas, Spain, $15. A refreshing albarino, crisp and clean. Aromas and flavors of pear, peach and mineral.
Clos La Chance, Hummingbird Series, 2007 Crimson Topaz, Central Coast, Meritage Red Wine, $18. A red wine with lively flavors. Aromas and flavors of dried cherry, herbs, pepper and caramel. Soft tannins.
Colome, 2007 Calchaqui, Argentina Malbec, $25. An exotic malbec with complex flavors. Notes of blackberry, cherry, white pepper and violet. Long finish.
Phillips Hill, 2007 Corby Vineyard, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, $40. A tasty pinot that's elegant. Notes of cherry blossom, plum, spice and caramel. Balanced.
Iron Horse, 2005 Brut Rose, Green Valley, Russian River Valley, $50. A dry rose sparkler with great minerality. Full-bodied and rich, with notes of cherry, strawberry and yeast. Nice crisp mousse.
