Seven months after moving to downtown Santa Rosa, the Sonoma Bicycle Company last week closed its Fourth Street store.
Citing the economy and intense competition, owner D.J. Campagna has consolidated his inventory of about 100 bicycles to his store in Petaluma.
“The location was great, the price was right, the problem is that Santa Rosa is just super-saturated with really good bike stores,” Campagna said.
Campagna moved his store from Montgomery Drive to the former Stanroy Music Center space in January, hoping to capitalize on the greater foot traffic in the downtown area.
Sonoma Bicycle was one of several new bike shops that raced to open prior to the February arrival of the Tour of California, the nation’s premiere cycling event. Since then, however, Campagna’s had a rough ride.
“The bottom has just fallen out of the market,” he said.
