Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week’s picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):
SKN, 2007, Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, $15. A bright, grassy wine, with notes of mango, lime and tart green apple. A hint of apricot and crème brulée. A great value.
Sokol Blosser, 2008 Dundee Hills, Oregon Pinot Gris, $18. Striking, with aromas and flavors of peach, apple, fig and spice. Crisp, yet rich. A very smart pick.
Olson Ogden, 2007 Sonoma County, Napa Valley Syrah, $28. A full-bodied syrah with a good structure. Notes of black cherry, herbs and spice. A hint of plum. Long finish.
Pellegrini’s Milestone, 2006 Sonoma County Red Wine, $45. A complex blend with aromas and flavors of blackberry, black pepper and anise. Layered with great spice notes.
Iron Horse Vineyards, 2004 Ultra Brut, Green Valley of Russian River Valley, $50. Crisp, dry and lively. Aromas and flavors of tart green apple, lemon, yeast and crème brulée. Vibrant mousse.
