Petaluma City Councilmember Mike Healy said Tuesday he is considering a run for county supervisor next year.

Healy, in his third term on the council, said he has put together a committee of 11 citizens from Petaluma, Penngrove, Rohnert Park and Cotati to help him decide whether to seek the second district seat on the Board of Supervisors.

Mike Kerns announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election in 2010 after serving 12 years as the south county’s supervisor.

If Healy decides to run, he would be the third candidate in the race. Former councilman Mike O’Brien and Penngrove rancher John King have announced they are running for the seat.

“These certainly are challenging times for local government,” Healy said in a statement Tuesday. “I feel I have the experience to hit the ground running and be an effective representative for the second district.”

Healy said he will spend the month of October talking with residents of the district before deciding whether to run.

The primary election is in June of next year. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters will advance to a runoff election in Nov. 2010.
