An Elk Grove man and his dog were rescued from a Bodega Head cliff Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Gary Webb, 50, was walking along the cliff at the south end of Bodega Head when his black labrador Bella fell off the edge, Sonoma County Sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Thompson said.

Webb clambered down to try and rescue his dog and got stuck about 25 feet down, braced between the cliff and a protruding rock.

He was stuck about 10 feet above Bella, and about 150 “treacherous” feet above the water, Thompson said.

It was 40 minutes before Webb’s wife, waiting with another of the couple’s dogs on the cliff top, was able to find a passerby who could call for help.

With State Parks rangers and Bodega Bay firefighters on the scene, the Sheriff’s Department helicopter, Henry 1, went in for a long-line rescue, shortly after 4:15 p.m., Thompson said.

Pilot Paul Bradley held the line taut while Tactical Deputy Debbie Little was lowered first to Bella.

“The dog was in a pretty precarious position,” Little said. “We sort of made a little harness and Ibearhugged her.”

Once Bella was lifted to safety on the cliff top, Little returned for Webb.

“He was thrilled,” Little said after the 2-minute rescue operation.

Neither Webb nor 1-year-old Bella was injured.
