A Sonoma State University student was identified Sunday as the fatal victim of a Highway 101 car crash early Saturday in Santa Rosa.

Maribel Medina, 19, of Olivehurst in Yuba County died in the 1:40 a.m. crash, the CHP said.

Three other people injured in the crash also apparently are Sonoma State students, the CHP said.

They were traveling in a 2010 Mazda M3 sedan when it ran off the highway and hit a redwood tree, CHP Sgt. Jeff Abrams said.

The crash occurred on southbound Highway 101 near Todd Road.

The three survivors suffered a variety of injuries and were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment, Abrams said.

Alejandro Cano, 19, was treated and released Saturday. Arnaldo Salazar, 20, and Alejandra Meza, 19, were believed to still be hospitalized. All three were from Santa Rosa.

CHP officers Sunday still were trying to determine who was driving the car. The three survivors were out of the car when officers arrived, as was the dead girl, who had been pulled out of the car, Abrams said.

Statements given by the survivors didn’t all match, possibly because their memories were affected by their injuries, he said.

The speed of the car and whether alcohol was a factor remained under investigation.
